You are going to make decisions for your career throughout your life. One of the more unheard of but rapidly growing field is the healthcare management. Health management offers an immense amount of opportunities and challenges. Healthcare executives work in a different array of environments including hospitals, long term care facilities, home health agencies, consulting firms and many others.

Perhaps it can be said that healthcare is changing more rapidly than almost any other field. The field is changing in terms of how and where care is delivered, who is providing those services, and how that care is financed. Some of the trends which are expected to rise in the following years are

For this particular field, these times are just full of potential and opportunities. The field requires talented people to help introduce and manage the changes taking place. In their roles, healthcare executives have an opportunity to make a significant contribution to improving the health of the communities their organizations serve. According to American College of Healthcare Executives, it has been estimated that around 100,000 people work in health management positions at various levels. Admittedly, the senior level positions in healthcare organizations are highly demanding. However, it is worth mentioning that they also provide opportunities to upgrade the current system of care giving.

One must be careful never assume health executives are needed in only traditional hospital setting. It is an open fact that many healthcare executives are known to hold senior positions in a broad range of institutions. Of course, the drawback to this is that it has indeed made the competition fierce even at entry-level job. Due to this many positions, which previously demanded a bachelor’s degree, now requires a Master’s degree.  Each year, about 2,000 students receive graduate degrees in healthcare management.

Academic training/previous work experience

  • sA degree in health administration from a school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education or another degree that may qualify you
  • A commitment to professional development and continuing education
  • Previous positions, internships, and fellowships in healthcare organizations or other business settings

Communication skills

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to develop and present reports and proposals

Adaptability/organizational fit

  • Personal and career objectives that mesh with those of the organization
  • Ability to work well with others, including superiors, subordinates, and peers
  • Attitude and appearance that communicate confidence, maturity, and competence

Dependability, judgment, character

  • Maturity to make decisions and take responsibility for them
  • Honest and ethical business conduct
  • Willingness to make a commitment to the organization

General management skills

  • Leadership that inspires and motivates others
  • Ability to train, delegate, evaluate, coordinate, and negotiate

  1. Investigate: investigate many educational programs both graduate and undergraduate. Programs vary widely from place to place. Some offer a broad summary of the field, while others provide in depth training in managing specific kinds of organizations.

  1. Be patient and flexible. It is highly possible that you will have to relocate to another part of the country to take advantage of a specific educational program or job opportunity. As mentioned above, different areas cater to different aspects of healthcare management.

 

  1. Develop interpersonal skills: Your success in the field of healthcare largely depends on your ability to get along well with people from all lifestyles. They may be employees, physicians, and the public. Knowing how to deal with each of them and how to negotiate and motivate them is crucial if you want to prosper in healthcare.
